Dr. Mark Andrew Cook


Mark Andrew Cook  is the Director of Music Theory and Composition in the Department of Music at Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, West Virginia.  He is also a member of the Jazz Studies faculty and is the pianist and coördinator for the SU Faculty Jazz Group.

Prior to his appointment at Shepherd University, he taught Music Theory and Aural Skills courses at The Benjamin T. Rome School of Music of The Catholic University of America.  Additionally, he served as the Director of the Jazz Ensemble.  He was an Adjunct Instructor in Music Theory and Aural Skills  at Towson University and was an Associate Professor of Music at Montgomery College, teaching theory subjects, Jazz studies subjects, and (at various times) serving as the Conductor for the Jazz Ensemble, the Symphonic Wind Ensemble and, lastly, as Music Director and Conductor for the Montgomery College Symphony Orchestra.

He is the Associate Director for Maryland Jazz Educators Summer Jazz Consortium, having previously served as Director (1990-2001), and Clinician/Faculty member since 1986.

Dr. Cook served as host for Jamey Aebersold’s two-day “Anyone Can Improvise” workshop from 1990-1998.

He Serves as the Director for the Shepherd University Summer Jazz Camp and “JV” Summer Jazz.

For three years, he served as Choirmaster and Director of Music Liturgy for St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church in Laytonsville, MD.

Dr. Cook is an Honorary inductee into Phi Mu Alpha, Xi Epsilon Chapter, the National Music Fraternity.

He performs throughout the region, and is in demand as a Jazz clinician and adjudicator.
